Captain Marvel who's secret identity is Billy Batson Anonymous 13/06/29(Sat)00:03 No. 23609

“It’s just such a great idea – you say a magic word, and suddenly you can fly, and bullets will bounce off you. Just a really, simple, great concept.

“I think the key is that magic word, ‘Shazam.’ Magic words are something that go back in fiction, back to myths and legends and The Arabian Nights. It’s just something that resonates for us, I think. And it’s such a good magic word – it sounds like ‘Alakazam.’

“Even Gomer Pyle was saying it. Dave Chappelle was saying it on his show. I’ve heard it in rap videos. Everyone knows what it means, it’s ‘Shazam!’ It’s the transformation into something else, like ‘Let’s go!’ It’s a call to action.

“And the costume – the red outfit with the lightning bolt. How many times in our lifetime have we seen generic parody superheroes, whether in an advertisement or anywhere, with a lightning bolt on their costume? The lightning bolt has almost become the generic symbol for a superhero, and it has its roots in Captain Marvel.”

Captain Marvel's cape; GREATEST superhero cape of all time Anonymous 13/07/08(Mon)20:32 No. 23616

While not as iconic or legendary as either the Superman or Batman capes, Captain Marvel can still make the claim of having the greatest cape of them all! The Big Red Cheese has the most original, most dynamic, most flashiest and most unique cape ever created. It has such a distinct look that it is almost impossible for creators to steal from it without making it so obvious. How many times have Batman and Superman's capes been copied and put onto other characters? Captain Marvel didn't have that problem. Plus his cape was never static, every panel on the comic page (even on his toys) showed it in different positions, whether it was hanging on his left side, right side, straight down his back, blowing in the wind, or just hanging over his arms, this cape had a life of it's own and the kids loved it.
If you still have a hard time believing that this cape is the greatest ever, know that it played such a major role in making Captain Marvel the number #1 comic character in the world back in the 1940's when comics were selling greater than they ever did as a whole in the history of the medium. Captain Marvel was that popular and that colorful that both Superman and Batman had to take a back seat to him. And another thing to think about; throughout the years even Superman and Batman's capes were upgraded and tweaked to fit into a new generation or contemporary art style. Never once, not once did Captain Marvel's cape or costume ever change to fit the times! Even when DC Comics got the rights to the character from Fawcett Publications and revived him in 1972, his cape, costume and overall look stayed exactly the same and he had not been seen in a comic for over 20 years prior! And even the greatest and most legendary Rock 'n' Roll singer/entertainer of all time, Elvis Presely had his stage outfits pay homage to CM's cape and costume during the 70's! Ask yourself how iconic and inspirational Elvis' image is to the whole world?? It simply doesn't get any bigger than that! With that many accolades, Captain Marvel's cape is what I call a perfect and timeless creation!
Sure, today with the new 52 going on, CM's costume and cape have been upgraded, but so wasn't every character in the DC Universe, so does that really count? Captain Marvel was said to be a knockoff of Superman when he was created back in 1940 by C.C. Beck and Bill Parker, but his adventures, look and success made him so much more and the longevity of the idea of his cape is a testament to that. To this day, DC Comics still tries to keep him in the shadow of Superman with consistently horrible revisions of his origin and having him being written by creators that don't have a clue on how to write him (I'm talking to you Geoff Johns!!). Only a select few have carried the flame of what truly makes the character great (Roy Thomas, Alex Ross, Paul Dini, and Mark Waid stand tall among them). Regardless, Captain Marvel will always be an enduring reminder of a simpler time when comics were based on the "fantastic" and the "whimsical" and the look of his cape is an homage to that...SHAZAM!!!!!!!

File 137410871333.png - (101.44KB , 300x169 , Drop dead DC with Shazam kids moniker.png )

After seeing this movie I am left in disgust. The Amazonian was a ruthless killer. Without hesitation see murders a child. I cannot refer to her as 'Diana' or 'Wonder Woman'. Those are names associated with a heroine. Not a murderess. Also seeing Steve Trevor murdered by the Amazonian just added to my contempt for her.

ABSOLUTLY STUPID that the stupidly-named 'Shazam kids' revealed to the Amazonian that they were Captain Thunder. OF COURSE A VILLAIN OR VILLAINESS exploits the fact that when they find out a superhero or superheroine has a weaker form, THEY KILL HIM OR HER IN THAT FORM! That's why it is WISE to have a secret identity!

What is even MORE INSULTING is that Captain Thunder's strength, speed and reflexes do not EXCEED that of the Amazonian. His power-level is EQUAL to that of Supes, himself.

Drop dead DC for using the words 'Shazam' and 'The Shazam kids'.
The RIGHT words are CAPTAIN MARVEL and THE MARVEL FAMILY. Always!

Are you fucking stupid? Did you skip through most of the movie?

How could you miss the fact that the differences were on purpose as the timeline was changed.

This is not the first time an alternate version of the heroes have been portrayed at villains.

Do yourself a favour and read something a little more simple for you tiny brain.

If I listen or read that someone tells or writes that I am fucking stupid my response is 'no, I am fucking awesome'.

Did you skip through most of the movie?
No, I did not skip through most of the movie. I did not skip through the movie at all.

How could you miss the fact that the differences were on purpose as the timeline was changed.
To me, it did not come across as a fact that the differences were on purpose as the timeline was changed.

This is not the first time an alternate version of the heroes have been portrayed at villains.
To me, 'Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths' is an animated superhero film, that is, so far, the first and only time an alternate version of the heroes have been portrayed at villains.

Do yourself a favour and read something a little more simple for you tiny brain.
I do myself a favour by reading everything I want for my brain. Whether that brain is tiny, large or whatever is, to me, irrelevant.

Drop dead DC for using the words 'Shazam' and 'The Shazam kids'.
The RIGHT words are CAPTAIN MARVEL and THE MARVEL FAMILY. Always!

Just to give ya a little more info relating to choices made in the movie and what 23623 said. This movie is part of the DCAU and, being as such, has the entirety of Justice League and Young Justice T.V. series to fall back on (for the whole heroes turned villains). Along with that, they are not called the Marvel family because they are in fact kids that go by the acronym S.H.A.Z.A.M, you see, in the alternate universe that the Flash created, the powers from the wizard Shazam were giving to six different children, all of them combined are needed to make Capt. Thunder/ Shazam/ Capt. Marvel (what ever you prefer to call him). So calling them "The Shazam Kids" is the correct terminology in this instance.

On a different note, Capt. was renamed Shazam in the New 52 reboot of all the old series, so yes, Shazam is a proper name for him now. And even then, most people know him by his cry of "SHAZAM" more then his name of Captain Marvel.

Along with that, they are not called the Marvel family because they are in fact kids that go by the acronym S.H.A.Z.A.M

The acronym S.H.A.Z.A.M stands for the wisdom of Solomon, strength of Hercules, stamina of Atlas, power of Zeus, invulnerability of Achilles, and speed of Mercury.

On a different note, Capt. was renamed Shazam in the New 52 reboot of all the old series, so yes, Shazam is a proper name for him now. And even then, most people know him by his cry of "SHAZAM" more then his name of Captain Marvel.

To me, the superhero name that is PROPER for Billy Batson to use, after he is transformed by saying the name of the wizard 'Shazam', is CAPTAIN MARVEL.
In order for CAPTAIN MARVEL to transform back into his secret identity, Billy Batson, he needs to say 'Shazam' again.
To me, DC has a CONDESCENDING attitude towards ANY reader, because everyone with a tiny, large or whatever brain UNDERSTANDS that 'Shazam' is the magic word that transforms Billy Batson into CAPTAIN MARVEL.

To me, CAPTAIN MARVEL is like a badge of honor for Billy Batson to refer to himself when he is transformed.
To shout the wizard's name 'Shazam' is like a cry of honor for Billy Batson to refer to the wizard named Shazam.

Drop dead DC for using the words 'Shazam' and 'The Shazam kids'.
The RIGHT words are CAPTAIN MARVEL and THE MARVEL FAMILY. Always!

Captain Marvel by Alex Ross' Kingdom Come up for movie treatment Anonymous 13/07/29(Mon)01:23 No. 23631

I think this character/movie works because it speaks to the child in all of us. All of us want to grow up faster when we’re younger, and Billy gets to do that at will and have superpowers to boot. What’s not to love? The wholesome nature of the character speaks more to Captain America: The First Avenger than anything else, especially considering the hero derives from the 1940s. This could be a coming-of-age adventure like none we’ve seen before.

Don't blame DC. Blame Marvel, who won't let DC call Captain Marvel by his proper name on anything. At least DC can still call him Captain Marvel in the pages of the comics themselves.

Marvel Comics 'Captain Marvel' does not have a secret identity. Instead it is a BORING woman who's friends, loved ones etc., are never in danger by hanging around with a public figure like her. She's also a united states air force pilot who only serves the united states.

Gimme Captain Marvel, who's secret identity is Billy Batson, any day.
He is not DRAFTED by the united states to become one of their 'super-soldiers' to do their bidding.
He is also a champion of the world, not just the united states.

People forget how popular Captain Marvel was at one time. He had his own radio show, a movie serial and outsold Superman for a time. Imagine OUTSELLING the most prominent superhero of all time at the height of popularity for the medium. That’s bananas. But Captain Marvel would have been pretty well-known to a generation of Americans. So it’s not strange that some parts of the Captain Marvel mythos would become part of the zeitgeist, even when the people saying “Shazam!” may not understand the origin of the term, the same way that most people don’t know that terms like “Brainiac” and “Bizarro” originated with Superman.

Billy is hosting a quiz bowl at WHIZ Radio with three young contestants. During a commercial break, Billy receives an urgent letter from Sarah Primm requesting his presence. He immediately goes to see the dying woman, who tells Billy about his twin sister. When the Batson twins were orphaned after their parents died in a car accident, Primm had substituted Mary for the baby girl of a rich family she nursed for, who had suddenly died, and sent Billy to an orphanage. Primm gives a locket broken in half to Billy. Mary, Primm tells Billy before dying, wore the other half of the locket.
