I was having a frank exchange of opinions with a friend on the merits of Flash the other day, now my friend is one of those guys who likes to believe he's at the cutting edge of technology and he firmly believes that Flash is dead, redundant even thanks to HTML 5

I disagree, yes, HTML 5 is exciting and all that but I have yet to see it replacing Flash websites and forcing casual online games out of the picture.

Only people that consider themselves on the cutting edge of things, like your friend, would think that.

Flash will never die. It has a following. A purpose. People know Flash and there's tons of material for it out there. Not to mention the plugin will always be needed for the millions of flashes out there.

Flash might stop being used for design in homepages, and for embedding media. But that doesn't matter.

Those that want to make an animation will still prefer Flash. It's just a ton easier to make it. Coding games is also better to do in Flash.

Sure you can do those things in HTML5 (I guess?) but not as easy.

Also, skilled people doing cool things in Flash already know Flash. Why would they learn the new thing to do the exact same stuff they could have done twice on Flash already without thinking about it. The flash plugin will be needed for those people. And if skilled people are still using flash they will influence new people to use flash.

HTML 5 has its purposes but is not a threat to Flash. I believe Flash will never go away unless Adobe ditches it just because they want it to go away (which it still won't for many many years even if they stop developing it).

For example, say that I wanted to make one of those stick figure fighting animations with sound, gradient colors and text speech bubbles.

That goes very fast to make in Flash with a few tweens, keyframes, frames that play audio upon being entered and of course text that enters on a frame and goes away on another. Animations and coloring are put in their own movie clips. All done with a easy GUI.

I wonder how hard it would be to make the same thing in HTML 5. Of course it also have to be of the same quality, with vector graphics.
