Windows Media: Windows Media Format 11
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Windows_Media_Format_11.htm

1. Media Player Classic
By far the fastest opening media player I've ever used. The players GUI is based on Windows Media Player 6.4. (This was back when eyecandy and bloatware wasn't a requirement at MS.)
The 4/5mb exe you download is the program.
You simply drop it into a folder (e.g. C:\MISC\Media Player Classic)
Then go to View>Options-Player-Formats
Then click Video then Apply
This associates all video files to MPC.
Once you learn how to use the hotkeys you'll never want to go without.
Documentation: (Translated from Russian)
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=144472

2. Real Alternative
Install Notes: Select 'No Players' & 'Don?t create shortcuts'.
This allows you to play Real Media files without the nasty RealOne media player.
I remember back in the day when you had a mile long list of options to uncheck but Real still installed the things you unchecked! Now you can open Real Media files in MPC faster than you ever could with Real Player. Also supports WMP.

3. Quick Alternative
Install Notes: Select 'No Players' & 'Don?t create shortcuts'.
Lets face it, QuickTime is slow loading on a PC and the brush metal eyecandy just doesn?t fit in. With quick alternative opening Mov's in MPC or WMP will be no problem. Also, it doesn't startup in the background when you start Windows.

4. Combined Community Codec Pack
The best codec pack I've ever used. I've tried K-Lite and had some very ugly results. CCCP is fairly straight forward but also allows more advance selections. Handles everything except odd formats like 3GP and VIV.

5. Windows Media Format 11
If WMV files freeze up shortly after starting or have a rainbow effect then you do not have the latest Windows Media Player. Good news is you don?t need WMP 10 or 11. Windows Media Format 11 gives you the same thing without installing more Microsoft bloatware.

(MPC can handle virtually any video provided that you have the proper codecs.
If something doesn't work or stops working then refer to Google or check for newer codecs.)

any linux distro with a minimal install will do (debian, gentoo, etc), personally I prefer gentoo because after installing you usually know all services running and you know which ones are essential for the stuff you do (because you usually have to install them manually / add specific useflags to packages). On the other hand gentoo is really "slow" when you try a lot of different packages because you usually compile them yourself instead of using binary packages. OpenOffice may need up to 12h if you got a slow computer and if you don't do a binary install.
