Being a head of state like Churchill or Roosevelt is analogous to being a ship's captain. The actions of your subordinates are ultimately YOUR responsibility. Harris and LeMay envisioned and executed campaigns that were just as ruthless and evil as anything the Nazis or the Imperial Japanese military committed...but the generals couldn't have done so without the approval of Franklin and Winston. Ultimately, it is THEY who have earned the condemnation of history.

Historian 14/05/10(Sat)22:34 No. 14290

there was a knight in the Holy Roman Empire who was beheaded for massacres of a town ("Actions which he as a knight should have prevented")...he was killed by his own side. Im guessing there was such morality throughout history.

Also, depending on the era the chinese engaged in honorable combat and didnt necessarily try to wipe each other out (this was before Qin Shi Guang Di)

>>Actually what the allies did was return what had been meted out to them previously, but escalated to a scale that axis powers couldn't match.

The allies 'accidentally' bombed German cities and the Germans retailated. In Poland the Germans offered a surrender before attacking.

Sorry, didn't know where else to put this other than under "culture".

Some of you may be familiar with websites which host entire series and movies; Rainertamayo.com in particular brazenly hosts full videos right there, no redirects or searching through links- one click and a full episode in a youtube player.

I am curious, by what virtue does this site survive? It makes no pretense to redirect or aggregate in the style of tvduck, etc. With the times as they are, how can a website simply host this material itself unmolested? Is it some way the site is configured to defend itself, like the pirate bay's dancing from server to server? Is it a current lack of initiative on the part of powers that be? On that note, what is the current state of this struggle to control media? After SOPA and PIPA were defeated to much fanfare, it seems like the war has been.. under-reported.

What type of person is compelled to maintain a professional site such as this or the pirate bay? Do they really believe in freedom of information or do you think it's a more base, anti-authoritarian compulsion? Surely one begets the other.. pic unrelated

Anyone can put up a website. Anyone can register a domain.

The reason these sites survive is because the various media cooperatives (MPAA, RIAA, IFPI, etc.) are not aware of their existence.

Basically the MAFIAA have paid technology companies that are down on their luck and desperate for work to write and maintain web crawlers that do the same thing Google has done for years... walk from page to page indexing pages and content and links all across the internet and back again.

If it's placed on a publicly accessible website, or a private site which they've infiltrated (because people talked about that private site on public websites), then their custom web crawler locates and identifies content and reports it back to their masters.

The only way for sites to stay under the radar is not to talk about shit in public. Otherwise it's just a matter of time.

What would happen if theoretically, all the states of the united states became city-states?

Temporarily removing all prescence of the United States from the world-wide stage, until the individual states who still wish to continue that effort must fund it. This would give states who wish to focus on growing the economy and not contributing to causes they have no control over, maybe?

Discussion about historic buildings.
More to what I want to know, the GPO Dublin, essentially where the English buck was stopped by Mikey C and the boys, has three statues atop it: Hibernia, Mercury and Fidelity.
Problem is I cannot find any trace of "Fidelity" as a deity or otherwise in mythology or historic beliefs. The statue in question appears female, has a dog at its feet and a key in hand, It's my oppinion the statue is actually Hecaté (Goddess of Poison, witchcraft, household blessings, actually quite suitable for Ireland), what think?

Historian 14/04/02(Wed)12:43 No. 14240

Fidelity is probably a representation of Penelope.

Penelope and dogs are idealized faithful companions.

OP, I'll assume you refer to contemporary history. Then it seems obvious that it is in large written by the US and western Europe. I'm sure many Asian and African countries have their own cute histories, but at least up until very recently they did not how the academic nor political clout to get their stories counted. For instance, remember how Japan at one point had the world's 2nd largest economy and was predicted to overtake the US as number one eventually? Still, no one gave a shit about their historians. Because there was around 500 million US soldiers posted all over their little islands that made any claims they forwarded impotent.

We need a giant battlefield movie, set in any period with gunfire... preferably the Seven Year's War, this would be the best way to vicariously live in the most interesting parts of all of history

With all the funds... GoPro's in the actors playing the cavalry, artillery, officers, rankers, battlefield observers.. jumping to the king's point of view ( in some cases the General himself ) showing BOTH sides of the conflict. or third parties like nearby villagers or deserters

The scale will need to be huge, 40,000 ideally...

With so many perspectives (goProCams) you'd get a like a movie in the third dimension, you wouldn't necessarily sit down and watch it, though it could be edited that way for multiple movies within the battle, or you'd click on different cameras while the movie is playing throughout time and choose what you are watching and from who's point of view

6 hours worth of a continuous acting on a battlefield with high tech special effects and scripting would produce the most content ever

If Europeans are considerate to their ancestors they could work together to make it happen, i mean by god! they've been doing it for 300 years, this is a minor project to them!

I totally agree. I thought I was the only one. The last good battlefield movie set around that time period was Waterloo. That movie was a job well done. It will just take so much time to do something like this. All the choreography and money...

Seven Years war would be eh. The battles get huge during the Napoleonic era. So something like battle of Austerlitz, battle of Jena or battle of borodino would be sick and would suffice for an epic battle.

But 40,0000 is more realistic I guess.

In modern culture Hitler is used as the epitome of evil, many will even consider the mere fact that he liked something as a basis of slander (i.e. Hitler was/liked X, therefore; X = Evil). His legacy will far outlast Bin Laden/Hussein and many others.

But who came before him, who held the gold standard prior to him taking it? And who was before that? Who's names have manifested evil on a scale unprecedented before them?

Napoleon, probably.

I don´t know when exactly his reputation turned from "Monster" to "One of the greatest conquerors ever", but people didn´t exactly like him in the new age period.

Historian 14/03/06(Thu)21:03 No. 14196

Hitler wasn't special. All of Europe was a fascist hotpot at the time. Everyone thought Hitler was great until he started stealing countries the other powers wanted influence over. "Peace for our time" wasn't some great scam the evil fascist Hitler pulled on poor, bleeding heart liberal Chamberlain. The only reason we are being forced to remember Hitler as evil today is because he was such a clever asshole and tricked the to-be Allies so hilariously, they still live with the blood shame.

> These two murdered more people than all the other great mass-killers of history combined, including Hitler himself.

When you say mass-killer(murderer), I assume you mean people dying as a more or less direct consequence of their policy decisions, and not personally and physically killing people? Because then you might wanna look at WW2 death toll statistics and reconsider.

How significant are the Olympics to international relations, worldwide? Do they actually help countries get back on better terms, like it gives them something to talk about, or they're forced to be together in some capacity

Or on the other hand does it calm the populace down for awhile, especially the Chinese

What are any other global effects of the Olympics?

totally forgot about writing that
I doubt specialized genetic engineering will be valid, desirable or needed to be honest, don't forget that evolution is *always* in play, even in the most stagnant of situations something will come around eventually, and that 99.9% of species are extinct (they're all dead)

humans have a difference though in that they can manipulate the environment around them as well as use a variety of methods to adapt to the environment - both come from the learning processes and being a social animal (you can watch others and learn from their mistakes)

this allows coordination and cooperation that when combined with tool making makes for some *really* sick capabilities, and a lot of the bloodlust is the result of a shitty life and abuse

I was reading a book called american fascists, and it talks about how essentially those groups are made up of desperate and scared people who want revenge against the world and society and types of people that betrayed them

so when obama talks about liberal values, but leaves people out to dry, this makes them hate liberalism, because his lack of liberalism isn't understood to mean a lack of liberalism, it's understood to mean liberalism itself is bad (this isn't helped by various icons of traditional liberal values cheering for him or anything)

as an aside, I'm willing to bet that a wage society is a decaying society in many ways (although not always - start/completion based projects have a results oriented process) because it detaches reward from work/labour
