should GMs need consent from players to have NPCs rape PCs? Anonymous 17/02/21(Tue)12:53 No. 118181 [Reply]

Reading stuff like http://www.gamegrene.com/node/447 all the namefags are tipping their morality hats do I'd like to know what anons think of it.

To me it seems like biased pandering. What if I am fine if my character is raped but absolutely would be upset if my character is killed off? Why are my wishes not respected?

What if a player loves their character's magic sword. Does the GM need consent for a goblin to steal it? If not then why different logic for character virginity?

I was going to put a long post but honestly, others have already made my point for me. If something is unpleasant and the event adds nothing to the game, then leave it out.

Anonymous 17/02/26(Sun)01:19 No. 118454

definitely, your job as a GM is to make sure everyone is enjoying the game, that also means not upsetting the players, there is a big difference between loosing a sword or a character dieing, those are challenges to be overcome, by retrieving the sword or makeing a better character/reviving the old one, they are upsetting becaus they mean you failed, but that threat of failure is what makes games fun, Rape on the otherhand doesent really have a mechanical downside to the characters, while in real life it comes with trauma a player can just say "eh nah she will be fine once she sleeps it off" but to the players it can be a deeply upsetting and ruin the game while if they are not comfortable with the topic they certainly wont be able to roleplay the scenario properly and so a rape scene adds literally nothing to the game but makes everyone involved upset
tl:dr ones a problem to the character the other is a problem to the people, you should want your players consent on such things for the simple reason of not upsetting them, because if your players come out of the game feeling worse then when they started your a shitty gm

Scathach!EgoMUSS73k 17/02/27(Mon)09:42 No. 118543

I would say yes. Rape is a serious real world trauma, and it's not expected to happen in the normal course of a campaign. It is the normal course of a campaign that characters die, that their gear may be stolen.
Rape does not have any place at my table for this reason, and before it has one at yours, I think you should confer with *ALL* of the players, not just the one whose character you are considering having raped.

TL;DR: Made a game setting in 2014 that has come true, from Prez Trump to Drone workers. Should we change setting or not?

Hey. I am part of a small group that made our first game, a tabletop rpg. We spent most of our time building the system and rules but in 2014, we started alpha testing. People had difficulty making characters without a setting so we made one. Here is the problem:
IN the near future (2018-2020) the American president rises to power on a platform of making America great again after many years of war time hardships. His alliance with the long time fr-enemy Russia is based around fighting terrorism. The setting is cyberpunk-ish so drones and automated factories were around as well. Sadly these are now popping up in the real life news.
I worry that to release the story as is would be seen as a political stance regardless of our intent. Any ideas? Are we jumping at shadows, should we trust that the more fantastical changes and alterations to our fictional timeline is enough to keep us in the clear or should we pivot and try to make a new setting? Gen-Con is 6 months away and that was going to be our big public beta.

(Image is the emblem for an organization in our setting.)

The idea of a questionnaire at the testing is a stroke of genius actually. I am most likely going to borrow that idea. As for further changes, we didn't plan on a president making a wall, that was "new" but we did play with the female idea before shelving it.

Glad to help. I really think a game using a modern setting can find a niche, and provide a nice alternative to the standard fare. So while I may lean towards fantasy (1E), horror (Cthulhu) and space (Traveler), I look forward to perusing your work once it becomes available.

Best of luck, 8)

When you're writing science fiction that looks at various trends and stretches various events, it's hard to predict what might actually happen and what might be barely avoided. TBH, if you think keeping whatever element will just give you shit, then perhaps consider modifying it. That said, this could compromise your original vision. For what it's worth, you can add a disclaimer that flat out states that connections to our reality our coincidental and don't directly align with the author's views.

I've had this problem too, especially in light of recent events as well. I joke that it predicted the rise (and fall) of the "SJW" authoritarian-left as well as the "Alt Right" authoritarian-right. Not to mention, the rise of extreme groups and parties taking power and influence within the West (particularly the United States.)

Did it really predict this? No, I was just writing interesting factions for players to encounter/possibly clash with/maybe even align with if they so choose. That said, my setting has sort of evolved (devolved?) into something political as a result. But hey, I've had to make groups making fun of my own views to avoid seeming preachy... it kinda worked out, I guess. Perhaps you can add some self-deprecating touches. It's a method that has worked out for countless comedians and the like to avoid coming across as narcissistic, after all.

Barring that, take the South Park approach and examine the flaws of every side, take no prisoners and keep nothing sacred! I know you're not trying to make satire, but that could still work too.

That's unfair, English might not be his/her first language.
It could be that their native language is Redneck, Street or even American.

There is zero difference between the content of the Deluxe Edition (which is the current one) and the Deluxe Explorer's Edition. The only difference is that the Deluxe edition is a physically standard-sized book and the Deluxe Explorer's Edition is a smaller-sized book. But the pdfs have same content and page size is irrelevant.
