Good entry level? Anonymous 10/07/12(Mon)21:27 No. 9716

Hey, /w/
Just joined a marksman group at my college.
I've shot rifles and shotguns on different occasions, but don't really have much expertise in the world of guns.
Basically, what are your suggestions for a good competition rifle?
looking for something dependable that won't break the bank.
Pic unrelated, but fairly...eh.

Why don't you ask the people in your club?

they're a bunch of beginners too.
most of their guns are for hunting.
Or, like me, were introduced to the world of marksmanship through a friend, so they really don't have any expertise.

Well, unfortunately I don't have the least bit knowledge of guns or how they operate.
Therefore, I mainly lurk in this board. Why I'm even responding to this thread? The world may never know

What kind of competition?

I'm guessing they're not shooting long range. A .22 is probably sufficient for what they're doing. Cheaper that way.

A Ruger 10/22 is probably the most common and most easily customizable 22 rifle you can get. You can start off with a basic gun then add a scope, custom stock, trigger set, and bull barrel as you go. IMO at least one 10/22 should be in everyones gun collection, especially beginners.

Thirding, assuming it's appropriate for your competition type.

They're more expensive then when I got one, but it's an awesome 22 rifle.

Even the cheaper one is way more expensive than a 10/22.

Not if you look at MSRP of both.

But honestly though, why deviate to a new Czech firearm with scarce parts and accessories? The market is already saturated with good 22's made in the last 60 years that are less scarce.

I paid like $120 for a brand-new 10/22, no idea what the MSRP is.

About $277 base to $550 target. Median asking price at gunshows here is about $200-$300. Double if its a target model. Stainless fetching the premium.

My personal preference would be a stainless receiver and fluted stainless bull barrel and a Boyd Barracuda stock. Their stocks feel real good.

My bad, I got an evolution, its Ambidextrous. Though the Barracuda looks like it would have an even better feel.

For beginners a 10/22 would probably be more than enough for quite a while. There are definitely some more accurate and competitive rifles out there, but they're going to be out of your skill and budget range for now. And who was the guy groaning about CZ parts availability? I agree that a 10/22 would probably be better for them, considering the ability to upgrade it as their skill increases, but CZ's aren't piles of czech crap that need parts replaced constantly. They're actually quite prevalent in both the US and GB, and parts are NOT difficult to find. Compared to the 10/22 there's not as many aftermarket parts, but if you compare a 10/22 to all but a very few weapons it has a vastly more significant aftermarket.
