So /w/, I'm about two thirds through all the pre-training stuff for joining the Royal Navy as a Submariner. I can vaguely remember a rant someone had somewhere once about the exact reasons why women aren't allowed on submarines, and it was pretty informative about the conditions on one. If anyone has it, that'd be nice.

Any other info on getting your dolphins, pictures etc are also welcome!

One question that all prospective women should be asked before volunteering (though it'll never happen) is "Are you willing to risk losing your ability to have kids?". Nuclear submarines are one big health hazard - few crewmembers leave the service without some submarine related health problem. For me, it was asthma and an inability to sleep properly. Others, suicide, cancer, and other things that are classified that I still can't talk about. As I said, it's easy to want something when you're not aware of all the risks, and those risks are classifed Secret and not made public.

I shall choose to underestimate the risks.

I think the reason why there are no femal submariners is a) submarines stay down for months on end and they don't want to have to deal with a woman who finds out she's pregnant - at least on a ship you could take a heli or something in emergencies.

also b) there would need to be seperate men's and women's quarters and washing facilities and the Royal Navy hasn't the money to completely rebuild half the fleet (especially with the tory's cuts).

But if you don't mind coming back with an extra eye or ten then go for it OP!

Now call me naive, But I'd like to think the MOD invests money in keeping the people working for it alive, not just going "oh lol that'll do although they might all DIE of radiation poisoning"

There's always plenty of unemployed desperate for work.

Also, Navy story I heard from a mate: apparently they have a special sit-up where you have to try and sit up whilst someone else holds your shoulders down. At the same time another sailor boy positions his arse above your face. The guy holding your shoulders lets go and your nose/mouth goes straight into the sailor boy's arsehole. And to think people pretend that the Navy isn't gay...

Remind me to bullshit to my non-navy friends and see how much I can get away with.

I'm gay anyway, so w/e. Not that I'll admit it when I'm in.
