The books are meant to be comedy/entertainment. WWZ being more of a Science-Fiction novel in the same way as The War of the Worlds with elements(/scenes/parts? I can't quite think of the right word) of serious drama, comedy (both light and dark), and action.

I gotta agree with this, left coast would be fucked (california's crazy gun laws)

East coast would be fucked due to population density, however due to the ammount of guns (especily in the southeast, plus the moutains) the spread would be MUCH slower, or even abated (for a while at least) in some areas.

Midwest states with lower populations and very low density would do quite well, bulk of surviving population would end up here, with pockets in the southeast.
