walmart machetes suck, that's why their so cheap. the steel is waaaay too soft and it isn't full tang. i broke the handle off the second day i had it, just doing some light clearing. Go with a better make, even the gerbers (also not full tang) for 20 bucks are better

LC14-B WWII survival hatchet/knife.
I just recently sharpened the fuck out of it with a honing stone. It is *unbelievably* sharp now; I think I could almost shave with it. Back when it was completely dull, I cut down a good-size tree with it. I have no doubt that you could split a skull open with it, if not sever the neck or limbs.
Plus there's a blunt "toe" towards the end of the blade with which you could surely crack a skull. Not to mention that the pommel on it is heavy and hard, so you could bludgeon with that if you had to. Not my weapon of choice, due to the lacking length, but I have no doubt that it would serve me well until I got my hands on a gun or a more lengthy melee weapon. In fact I'm pretty sure it'd be a love tool/weapon afterwards, especially if you needed to move through a wooded area.

If you haven't guessed yet, the metal quality is better than that of a shitty machete you can by at home depot. Not that a machete wouldn't be useful if you didn't have anything else.

The newer ones are much nicer and hold an edge better without sacrificing the durability. It's called a woodman's pal and if you could only have one tool with you wherever you go, it should be this. My only problem using this in the zompocalypse is the sheath. You can't pull it straight out, you kind of pivot it to get the scythe part out. The standard one doesn't come with the hand guard on it, but it's only about a hundred bucks for the one that does. Plus, there's been stuff published on how to fight with these very effectively by pro tool industries (the company that makes them) and by the military. Fucking awesome thing to get to crack zeds open with.

pic is the new one
>> No. 23082
>>23080
I know about the fighting manuals, I have one. And yeah, it says Woodman's pal right on the blade of mine so I figured. =P Personally it's never had a problem holding an edge since I've been taking care of it. What kind of metal is the newer one made of? Is that the Vietnam model?
I had to get a new honing stone though; the one that came with it was shattered into dust. Got a much better one. The friend that gave it to me didn't take very good care of it. :|
The sheaths are a bit weird, but not too much of a problem if you get used to them.
>> No. 23089

>Vietnam model
they haven't changed the design much, but the regular one now has no handle guard, they have jr. models for kids, there's one with a shorter blade, but a much longer handle, and the one in my previous pic was the pro or deluxe or something like that.
as for the steel, I'm not sure, but my new one definitely stays sharper longer than one I pick up in the army surplus store. It is high carbon steel though, because if you grind off some of the coating, you can make sparks with flint (the rock, not those ferrocerium sticks, those'll make sparks on anything)
>> No. 23094
As far as "weapons" go, this is all I have:

A 15'' wooden bat
A broom
A mop
A doorstopper
A lamp
5 televison sets, comp monitor and hard drive
A bike
A 1987 Webster's dictionary
A dull 1' short sword
An iron
3 microwave ovens
2 kitchen knives
2 vacuum cleaners
A hammer
A 3'x3' glass tabletop
A 20 pound dumbbell
4 electronic fans, 2 desk, 2 standing
A couple frying pans
A fire extinguisher
A bike
A wheelchair
Some pens
My fists, arms, feet, legs and head

Yep, when Z-Day comes, I'm gonna be completely prepared... to die. All I have is anything that can be compromised as a weapon. I need some guns.

Have you actually had the WWII model? I didn't know you could find them much anymore. Besides on the internet at grossly inflated prices.

You say you found yours in an army surplus store? I think I'm gonna go poking around a local one and see if I can;t get another one, be it the new model or one like my own.

At least you're smart enough not to call it a katana, I'll give you that much.

Me, I've got a fuckload of blunt objects, a few knives, a Louisville Slugger, crowbar, a set of cheap-ass Jap swords a la flea market (doubt they'll be of any use, although a friend of mine says they'll be battle-ready if I sharpen/hone/polish the blades and keep the sheathes clean).

If I'm at my computer (likely) I'll just grab the 2x4 I'm using to prop it up and beat Zack to death until I can get to the garage or the gun safe, depending in which way I head from here.

I have a staff, machete, hatchet, and four knives. I'd throw away the throwing knives, since I never learned how to use them, and keep the other two for utility purposes. I'd throw away the machete ($20 Gerber machete) and keep the staff and the hatchet. Hatchet can be used indoors easily, the staff can be used outdoors to fuck up their shit at a better distance (5' 10" staff).

Nearby or within one good lunge across the bed, I have a pretty solid walking stick I've hand-carved, which if anything would be used to shove into its teeth, a butterfly knife which would be headed for an eye if I were dumb enough to rely on it, two dumbells which would be good enough bludgeons if I knocked it down and got a good mount on it, a 5 dollar machete from the flea market, it's pure steel with a cord-handle and teeth notched out on the backside, two air rifles, one that can reach 730 fps with a few pumps, and one old one which I would have trouble getting to work.

All in all, nothing short of berseker rage would get me through the start of it all. Something I happen to have in large quantities.

I've got a scoped Ruger .22 Mag single action revolver, a CZ-50 and CZ-52 all in the room I am currently in. I also have a WWI Short Sword/Bayonet and my Kershaw Storm at hand, but I'd likely choose a handgun over a blade initially. Day to day I have my CZ-52 and Storm on me, though. The gun is loaded with some hollow points that I got to about 1700fps on the chrono and due to my CWP I almost *always* have it on me as long as I'm not in a federal building. I assume it is my most likely first-response weapon.

You all fail. You shouldn't use melee!!!!

They've got 3 elements more superior to us...

1. They have larger numbers
2. They have no nerves
3. They are fuckin' hungry

Not to mention it depends on where you live...
In cold tempatures the zombies flesh with start to freeze, making them slower. But the problem is actually the fact that their skin may end up becoming too hard to be affected by sharp objects... Bullets ftw.
