It's an interesting take but biased. The whole game is geared towards the "Competitors", for the Monopolists to win they need to either get luck or hope the people they're playing with will trade haphazardly.

replacing speaker with 1/4" jack chrissychris 16/12/19(Mon)21:09 No. 16401 Board: /sci/ ID: 8ed2cc [Reply]

Alrighty, I am looking for some help.

For the sake of experimentation and fun, I'd like to replace the speaker of a shitty kids toy (very similar to the one in the pic) with a 1/4" audio jack so it can play through a larger amp, possibly even through guitar effect pedals.

I've already tried this twice. Taken apart the toy, soldered in a 1/4" jack, and plugged it in. Both times I ended up with a reallyyyy spotty and quiet sound. At first I thought it may be a bad soldering job, but now I feel like it could be due to the low power of the toy, it takes 3 AA batteries.

So what's the deal here? Any ideas what could be wrong?

Anonymous 17/01/01(Sun)23:02 No. 16405 ID: 67f38c

It has nothing to do with the electrical power. Real electric guitars don't have any batteries. The issue could be that the amp is designed to work with the signals from a guitar's pickup, which are probably not the same as the signals from a speaker. If I had to guess, the pickup would be taking the signals from each string individually, while the speaker from this kid's toy is taking the entire sound as a whole.

It's also possible that the teeny-tiny magnet in that speaker just isn't strong enough to send a strong signal. I'm not sure what you could do about this.

>>
Anonymous 19/05/08(Wed)19:01 No. 16767 ID: c6dd74

the toy generates a signal of a much lower power (higher impedance) than a guitar pickup is expected to, that's why it's very quiet. as for it being "spotty", the most likely reason is that the sound you hear from the toy is largely due to the way the tiny speaker reacts to the incoming "lo-fi" signal. if you take the speaker out of the chain, you'll most likely lose the sound you're presumably trying to capture.

tl;dr - you can find a way to preamplify the signal before it gets to the amp, but it will still be "spotty". better yet, install a mic/pickup next to the toy's speaker.

the poster above is misinformed. passive guitar pickups don't draw current from batteries, they generate it when metal strings vibrate over the magnetic pole pieces of the pickup. it's safe to assume the toy does not have pickups and therefore needs to generate the signal itself by drawing current from the batteries. the toy is only expected to output its sound into a tiny, low-power speaker, so an appropriately low-powered signal is generated, which is too quiet for a guitar amp because of a much higher impedance, and sounds "spotty" because the signal is too "lo-fi" to sound good on a larger speaker.

as for what was said about guitars:
>Real electric guitars don't have any batteries
a lot of electric guitars/basses use 9V batteries, but plenty don't. an active pickup still generates current, but that signal is too low-power to go straight to the amp and needs to first go through the built-in active preamp. active pickups generate a low-power signal which is supposedly easier for the active EQ to handle and makes the signal less noisy (debatable). active pickups can be designed with a particular tonality in mind even if it sacrifices the output - it works because the signal still goes through the preamp on the way out. on a fully passive instrument the pickup itself is responsible for generating enough current to produce a signal of an acceptable level, which often results in a "nice tone vs high output" tradeoff situation. often times the pickup itself is passive, but the battery is needed for the EQ. active EQ can give you independent control of low/mid/high frequencies, whereas passive EQ is generally limited to a treble roll-off. some guy made optical pickups, which uses light emiters and photodetectors. those obviously require batteries.

>the pickup would be taking the signals from each string individually
not strictly wrong, but not exactly true. in most pickups there are separate magnet pole pieces that pick up the vibrations of each string individually, but the signal that the pickup outputs is generally one and the same. there are exceptions, i think it was Roland who made a pickup that output the sound of Message too long. Try hammering the speakers a bit
Usually the sound is just hidden inside and you need a little force to yank it out

Do you feel particularly uninteresting because the interesting times have passed? Or perhaps that they have yet to come? The isolation as of late surely hasn't helped but what's your prognosis John?

It's a combination of the economy as you pointed out, as well as the effects of Covid. A lot of people I know, including myself, got so used to isolating that it became comfortable for them. Around 1/3 of the people I knew became shut-ins after Covid.

>>47588
Are you truly content John? I lived the same way for years and convinced myself that I was content. Perhaps I genuinely was. However, I slowly started getting this itching feeling that maybe I was missing out on something. That feeling grew stronger to the point that it became an anxiety.

Finally my anxiety over potentially wasting my life grew so loud that I couldn't peacefully sit at home anymore. The only solution, I figured, was to force myself to go out. I started meeting with my friends again, rekindling old connections, planning trips, and even signing up for yoga classes, going rock climbing, and even hopping on online dating.

It's been anything but comfortable, but that being said, it's been exhilarating. I've experienced some lows, but I've also experienced some highs that I did not know existed. For example, pulling a sweet girl who likes you close and cuddling her while you stroke her hair is a feeling I'd not experienced before, but that brought me great joy unlike anything else in life. I would have not known of this pleasure had I resigned myself to my previous life.

Of course there are lows too - I've experienced embarrassment from making multiple faux pas or just generally being awkward, as well as experiencing the heartache of feeling a romantic interest slip away from you. Still though, it's been a more eventful 6 months than the previous 4 years combined.

Because his ideas were more the product of witnessing the toxicity of politics, in the run up to, and the rhetoric of, the English civil war. His ideas have to be seen in that context. He wasnt merely publishing a political tract, he was nailing his colours to the mast, so to speak. He was simply stating what he thought the new politics should be about, and by writing it down was also creating a way to explain himself in a court of law if his side failed to win and incase he was prosecuted.
He produced conflicting political positions regarding whether the people consent to be ruled by a monarchy or not. In other words, whether, or not, simply allowing a king to rule implies consent.
His ideas were stale after the civil war and in fact I believe he went overseas to escape possible prosecution during the Civil war. I have always thought Hobbes ideas were merely written to justify his support of the monarchy and to provide a way of arguing his case if Cromwell had wanted to put him on trial
After the civil war his ideas were just old fashioned, debate had moved on

Forgot to add that, even though his writings regarding his love of the monarchy were largely forgotten, it is still the case that he wrote both in defence of the monarch and then when cromwell appeared to be winning Hobbes wrote his political tracts regarding the rights of the ordinary man

My 11 year old Golden Retriever, Max, was just diagnosed with Canine Osteosarcoma in his front right arm.

I just found out about 4 days ago, and the vet visits to diagnose the severity and spread- have left me absolutely broke.

Let me tell you about Max. He isn't just a dog, he's my absolute world. I grew up in a very toxic environment, and separated myself from my family when I was 18-19 years old. When I was 20 years old, I adopted Max (he was 1 year old at this time).

Throughout the next 10 years, I have been through every let down you can imagine, and while Max could never understand why he saw those tears run down my face- he didn't need to. He knew I wasn't okay, and would lay next to me, wanting nothing more than my love.

I'd rather be the one going through this than him.

I was unemployed most of this pandemic, but recently started working again. I was barely getting caught up, and with this sudden event... I'm left not knowing what to do.

He has an appointment tomorrow (19/08/2021) to find out if it hasn't spread enough to amputate his entire leg. If he qualifies? He will start chemotherapy shortly after.

As I mentioned above, I do not have close relatives that I communicate with.
Message too long. Click here to view the full text.

I'm sorry about your dog, but he's not going to live forever and you need to come to terms with that. Putting him down may be more merciful than amputating his leg and putting him through chemo. And if it were me I'd also want to just go out peacefully.

11 years is an old age for a dog. I wouldn't spend money I don't have just to lengthen his life by max 4 years. Get a puppy.

It's just a convenient method to get more protein in your diet. I'd be careful when buying protein powders however, some brands are known to have heavy metals such as Muscle Milk, while others are known to contain filler such as Musclepharm. It's generally recommended to buy safe brands such as MyProtein and Optimum Nutrition.

>>
Anonymous 23/01/13(Fri)17:37 No. 39931

No need to redpill. Eat quality foods. You'll save money and get more satiety.

Quick and easy; chicken, ground beef. Eat it after your training. You'll get the same benefits and it's less processed as the shitty protein powders.

If you do go down the protein powder path and it makes you gassy/bloated in any way, stop because you're affecting your gut in a negative way

Hi, John.
I don't know what to do.
My brother is very sick and my mom is dying of stress because of it.
Apart from that, here's my question.
Which is better?
A: save up money for lighter fluid and smoke any amount of ciggarettes thst i want and do it outside while listening to music
B: buy a pizza and watch ghost in the shell without worrying about anutying for about 1 or 2 hours.
Sorry for the interesting opitons, that's just me.

Hello John,

Thank you for the timely response. I would suggest the movie. Perfect amount of time to enjoy a pizza. That includes proper digestion and wait time for delivery if you decided to get that. If you did not want to interrupt the movie to answer the door you could always smoke and listen to music while you wait.

Hope that helps,
John
