The first thing to do before any debate is establish values, you need to determine what is preferable compared to other things. This is where ethics comes in, any political discussion that does not begin with the establishment of what is to be considered good or bad lacks any metric of judgement and so there cannot be any discussion of politics since how can we decide how to pursue our goals if we can't say what our goals are?

So we begin with a cogitation on what ought to be achieved before we can say what ought to he done.
